In plain language
Two people can hear the same statement, understand the same proposition, and agree that it is true while the statement changes their attention, expectations, memory, priorities, or behavior very differently. The content can match even when its consequences do not.
The paper uses the ordinary word Weight for that consequence, but only after the object and relation are named. Weight can belong to a warning, belief, memory, observation, or intention, and the relevant consequence might be attention, belief revision, valuation, policy, or something else already defined by the local science.
Abstract
People often speak as though communicating a statement also communicates what that statement means for them. Yet two people can possess the same content, understand the same proposition, and endorse it as true while it carries different consequences for attention, belief revision, memory, valuation, policy, or action. This theoretical article proposes Weight as a disciplined, human-readable identification language for such consequentiality, not as a universal mechanism or common psychological unit. A scientific Weight claim must identify the already-defined object, target system, local consequence relation, context, and evidence; descriptive, predictive, and causal claims require correspondingly stronger evidence. The framework separates content possession, generative understanding, local consequence, provenance, observer estimate, and communication transfer, and forbids automatic inference among them or across unlike numerical scales. Established work on communication, relevance, involvement, attitude strength, shared reality, epistemic vigilance, source monitoring, risk, empathy, and measurement provides the component machinery. Weight survives scientifically only if its typed declaration standard improves measurement or inference beyond a matched generic-explicitness control; otherwise it should contract to useful ordinary language.
Why it matters
Communication often encourages an invalid shortcut: “I told you” becomes “you understood what this meant for me” and then “you should respond as I would.” Those are different claims. Transmitting content does not reproduce another person’s history, current state, valuation structure, or policy.
Weight is designed to make that gap discussable without turning it into a mysterious universal quantity. A scientific claim has to specify what carries Weight, for which system, in which relation, under what context, and with what evidence.
The framework succeeds only if that explicit typing improves measurement or inference beyond simply being more careful with ordinary language. If it does not, Weight should remain a useful human word rather than become a scientific construct.
