Abstract

Goal-directed action contains functionally distinguishable relations, while conscious task experience can have structured focal content. This theoretical and integrative paper proposes the You Are Here hypothesis: within a substantially common action architecture, the identity of the currently limiting transition predicts task-relevant focal phenomenal content. The proposal remains empirically undemonstrated and concerns what the experienced problem is about rather than difficulty intensity. The minimal prediction is I(B; ΦF | X, A) > 0. The stronger dynamic prediction is Bi → Bj ⇒ Φi → Φj. The dynamic prediction is distributional, not deterministic. A future empirical strategy would manipulate bottleneck location and test whether independently coded immediate reports predict bottleneck identity beyond generic demand and semantic reconstruction. The proposal fails if those alternatives or existing metacognitive accounts absorb the differentiation, or if focal content does not relocate when the bottleneck moves. The contribution is a testable cross-level correspondence between action organization and focal experience.

In plain language

Being stuck is not always the same kind of problem. At one moment the difficulty may be that no useful option has been generated. At another, several options exist but none has won. Elsewhere, the choice may be clear while the system still lacks a workable implementation, or an ongoing action may need evaluation and correction.

The hypothesis is that these different bottleneck locations are reflected in what the conscious task problem is about. It does not claim that consciousness literally moves through a processing pipeline, or that bottlenecks create consciousness. It predicts a correspondence between the functional location of unresolved progress and the organization of focal task experience.

Why it matters

Many accounts already explain why difficult, unresolved, or nonroutine processing can recruit attention, metacognition, or conscious access. The narrower question here is whether the content of experience contains information about where the problem is located within the action architecture, beyond simply signaling that the task is hard.

That distinction makes the proposal directly testable. If an experiment can move the dominant bottleneck while holding the broader task architecture substantially constant, then the content of immediate experience should shift with it. If reports are explained equally well by generic difficulty, effort, uncertainty, conflict, or by reconstruction from the visible task state, the stronger hypothesis fails.

If supported, the result would provide a constrained bridge between functional action organization and phenomenal organization: not a general theory of consciousness, but a specific account of why the experienced problem may have the particular content it does at a given moment.
